Jantar Mantar, Delhi

Among the many fascinating monuments in Delhi is the Jantar Mantar, a fantasy-like complex of gigantic astronomical instruments, which are the finest surviving examples of masonry instruments anywhere in the world. Five such observatories were built by Jai Singh II across northern India (the others are at Jaipur, Ujjain, Varanasi and Mathura). Though the one at Jaipur is the most extensive, the one at Delhi is perhaps the best-preserved. It also includes the intriguing Misra Yantra, one of the most-photographed structures in Delhi, possibly even in India.
