Itimad-ud-Daulah’s Tomb
Itimad-ud-Daulah’s story is one of the most spectacular rags-to-riches tales you may ever come across. After losing everything and being forced to flee Persia, he made his way, penniless, with his children and a pregnant wife all the way to the court of the Mughal emperor Akbar in Agra. With his business acumen and political astuteness, he was able to rise to spectacular heights.
His tomb was built in lavish style with extensive marble-work and stone inlay, the likes of which had never been seen before. In many ways, therefore, it was the precursor of the famous Taj Mahal!
